Aventail or Camail
Aventail that is also known as camail (neck guard of chain mall, hanging from the bascinet or other headpiece) is a flexible curtain of chainmail on a helmet and it extends to cover the neck and shoulders.
The mail could be attached to the helmet by threading a leather cord trough brass rings at the edge of the helmet.
Aventails were most commonly seen on bascinets in the XIV century and they had a roll to be a replacement for chainmail coif and they were attached to the helmet with small staples that are named vervelles.
The art of aventails went further on and they became decorated with edges of brass and bronze links or just dagged.
In the late XV century the aventails replaced chainmail coif completelly. Only poor people who couldn't afford one or collectionars remained the owners of chainmail helmets.
